About Square Gavriil Charitou
On 6 August 1946, Gabriel Charitos was elected as the first mayor of Rhodes after the end of the Italian occupation. In 1948, with the incorporation of the Dodecanese in Greece, he symbolically handed the island's keys to the capital of the Dodecanese in Basil Pavlos. In April 1950 he resigned from the mayor's office and was replaced by Doctor Simeon Labadarios. Later, he was elected three times, in equal numbers, in 1956, 1958 and 1961 with the EPE. He published the newspapers "Echo of the Dodecanese" and "Elefthero Dodekanissos". He died in Rhodes and his name was given to this square of the island, in front of his home.
